Creating a web site using the Web Page Generator (WPG)
One of the programs in Bonsai Genie has a very special
feature. It allows you to build a web site.
We offer free web space for user web sites which are created using this feature.
To whet your appetite, here a home page with links to websites
created using either Ideas Genie Pro or Bonsai Genie

You dont need to know anything about HTML (the Mark-up language used to create web pages)
You simply work your way through a series of steps using screens similar to
those youve used in the User Guide chapters, then click a Generate
button. Behind that button, the Web Page Generator (WPG) does all the work.
Ive put this under the advanced section, but in reality this is quite straight forward.
Follow the steps below and you will have a website in less than an hour, and that includes the pre-requisite!.
Having
said that, refining your web site to make it interesting to the visitor will take a bit longer, but thats something which you can do over a longer period.
You can do it! Lets go!
Pre-requisite
The first step in creating a web site using Bonsai Genie is to do a review of the list of plants which
you intend to display in your web site.
If you have already done Session 1, then continue
If not, Do Session 1

- Click the Programs tab on the Bonsai Genie menu (top of screen)
Start the program Reviews GA032
Note: This program is not listed in the Program Selection Screen as its not specifically
for Bonsai users.
You’ll find a number of other useful programs on the Menu!
- In the initial screen GA032S01, in Reviews mode:
Click the Web button (at the bottom right of the screen.)
NOTE:
This button does not appear unless you have added plants to a review as described in Session 1
Screen GA032S04 appears
- There are 11 steps
- Run the mouse over the buttons beside each step.
Note how Help appears for each step.
- Hover with the mouse over The Web Name field - Step 1, and read over the help
You dont have to do anything in Step 1
- Hover over the Web Page Prefix field (Step 2) and read the Help
You have to type in a Name in the Web page Prefix field
Heres an extract from the Help:
When you publish your web site on
the internet, this name will form part of the "Home" page Web Address of your web project - the name you give others to find your web site.
Example
You type in MyBestPlants
On
the ideasforgardens.net server, I allocate a folder for your web site named JoesWebSite
The URL (web address of your website will be:
http://www.ideasforgardens.net/JoesWebSite/MyBestPlants
Note how the name you choose (MyBestPlants) makes up part of the web
address.
You can change this later if you wish.
- Need an incentive?
Having entered a name for the Web page Prefix, we can now generate a set of web pages
Click the Colours button (Step 7)
Screen GA032S10 appears.
Click Save changes
(this will accept the default colour scheme for your web site)
Screen GA032S04 re-appears
Click the Generate Button (Step 8)
Click the View button (Step 9)
Windows will open your
default browser and display your new website
Its as easy as that!
It will have a list of the plants in your Review, and a web page for each
plant
No photos yet, but the data you keyed as a review for each plant will appear.
- Now to refine the details of your web pages, and to get photos to show.
You need an Introduction to the web site
Hover over the Introduction
button (Step 3)
Read the help
Click the Introduction button
Screen GA032S05 appears
- In screen GA032S05
Enter some text in the Introduction Text field
Click the Save (Text) button
Optionally, click Thumbnails to select a photo to use on the introduction page
Bonsai
Genie will make a copy of the photo you select in your Web Project folder, and resize it to suit the web.
Your original photo will NOT be changed in any way
Select a Photographer
from the pop-up (normally you)
Add notes about the photo in the Notes about this photo field
Save your changes
Screen GA032S04 reappears
- Now to select photos of your plants for the web site and add some text
Hover over the Web Pages button
Read the Help which appears
Click
the Web pages button
Screen GA032S08 appears
- In screen GA032S08
The list of plants in your review appears.
The object is to select a photo for each plant in the list (if available)
Note: The Photos must be previously linked to
plants (See Chapter 2 of the User Guide)
Click the Thumbnails button
Follow the screen prompt and select a Photo
Select a Photographer from the pop-up
Save your changes
Write
notes about the Photo you have selected
Click the Save button
Repeat for each plant in your review
Then click the Back button
Screen GA032S04 re-appears
- Click Generate (Step 8)
- Click View (Step 9)
You browser opens and will display your web site
- View your web site. Repeat whatever steps are necessary to make refinements and corrections
- Now to Publish your web site on the internet.
Hover over the Help button (Step 10)
Read the help

It explains how to
install a free FTP program, how to login to our server, and how to use the FTP Program to upload your website to our server

Very simple
Send emails to your friends with the link to your new web site!
